For a while we did not talk about the Melges 20, we come back on the topic today since the little boy has become 2009 Sailing World One Design Boat of the Year.
It seems that in Wisconsin they are very good in handing down the family heritage, as a matter of fact even the Melges 24 won the award few years ago.
For sure the Melges Band is expecting the next step to be reaching similar numbers of the 24 in the short time.
If you take the time to read our test drive again you'll soon realize that Adesso Vela was much ahead of Sailing World ;-)

Melges 32, how to gybe?

This short video taken during the first leg of the 2008 Audi Sailing Series could be useful to better understand how to gybe a 120 square meters gennaker.
Something like an Adesso Vela educational ;-)

The new Farr 30 ;-)

Mumm 30? Non più.

M30 Class Announces New Name - Farr 30 International One Design Class

The M30 International Class Association announced today its Owners have voted unanimously to change the name of the Class Association to the Farr 30 International One Design Class. In November, the Class successfully completed an agreement with Farr Yacht Design, Ltd and Bruce Farr to rename the Class. The agreement was subject to approval by M30 Owners in a Class vote under the Class Constitution. The name change and adoption of new logos will now be effective January 1, 2009.
The Class operated for 10 years under a naming rights and sponsorship arrangement with Champagne Mumm. Due to corporate reorganizations and a sale of the Champagne Mumm brand the arrangement was not renewed. After operating as the M30 Class on an interim basis, the Class is very pleased to announce its new name, reuniting the image of the Class with the original designer of this very successful One Design boat.
Nelson Stephenson, Class and World Council President noted that following the adoption of a new Class Constitution in October, the Class has been managed by its World Council and operated through a central Class Office located in Annapolis Maryland. Stagg Yachts, Inc. will continue as the Class Manager. Regional Fleets are being organized to conduct local racing under Class Rules around the World.
Adopting a new name provides a great opportunity for the Class to renew its marketing efforts and move positively into its second decade. Over 225 One Design boats have been built and are racing worldwide. New boats are presently being built by Waterline Systems, Inc in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and orders will be accepted by DK Yachts in Malaysia. Major Fleets are active and growing in Australia, Europe, Russia, Canada, the United States and many other countries around the World.
Stephenson said today, “Farr Yacht Design Ltd, working with Dave Irish, Barry Carroll, and Geoff Stagg, designed a great boat that has provided our Owners with a great One Design racing platform. The Farr 30 brings together Owners for a high level of competition, resulting in a very high fun factor at an affordable cost.”
Bruce Farr commented, “At Farr Yacht Design, we are delighted by the decision to rename as the Farr 30 Class and honored to renew and strengthen our involvement in the Class”. “This boat has been one our favorite designs and is one of the most successful 30 foot One Designs built, so it is gratifying that it now carries our name.

“Our goal in designing the boat was to create a state-of-the-art small offshore One Design that would be fast and exciting, yet uncomplicated and economical. It exceeded expectations and has generated incredible enthusiasm amongst owners and crews, being fun and basically straightforward to sail whilst rewarding skill and effort with extra performance. Strict one design rules and strong Class management have ensured incredibly close, fair racing and competitive fleets in many areas of the world, aboard a fantastic and delightful small Offshore One Design”.

BUM BUM Mataran!

Ora tocca a noi:

Chapeau!

The Sailing Anarchy Yacht Club (SAYC) today confirmed its entry in the 33rd America's Cup to be contested in the waters off Valencia, Spain in 2010 or 2011. Known as Anarchy Challenge, SAYC's racing syndicate will draw upon the immense resources of the world's most popular sailing website, SailingAnarchy.com, the brain child of San Diego-based sailor Scot Tempesta.

Although international in flavor, Anarchy Challenge will compete under the Stars & Stripes, and will be the only US participant in a field of up to 21 challengers which also entered the event before the December 15th entry deadline. As of Wednesday morning, Tempesta said that SAYC was still anxiously awaiting confirmation of its formal entry from the Société Nautique de Genève, the current America's Cup Defender.

'We are proud to represent the United States and our loyal members in this iconic sporting contest,' said Mr. Tempesta, who is also the Commodore of SAYC. 'Had our members not stepped up to the plate with their support and interest, it would have been the first time in the event's 157-year history that there was no US participation in the America's Cup. We could not stand by and let that happen.'

Under the stewardship of team CEO and SAYC Vice Commodore Alan Block, Anarchy Challenge has been working hard to assemble its media relations, campaign management, and sponsorship development team. 'There is no doubt that this is the first America's Cup Challenge to represent an on-line community, for we don't just represent the SAYC members, but the 30,000 person-strong membership and the one million monthly readers of the Sailing Anarchy site as well,' Block explained. 'Our members are mobilizing for this exciting challenge, and we're already starting to leverage this massively talented pool of talented engineers, designers, and sailors as we begin to assemble the administrative and competitive parts of our team.'

There is no clear consensus in the yachting community on whether the 33rd America's Cup contemplated by the 21 challengers will actually happen, as the prestigious event remains embroiled in a bitter custody dispute in the New York courts between Swiss Biotech magnate Ernesto Bertarelli and Oracle founder Larry Ellison. Tempesta remains positive on the future of the event: 'When these billionaires are done bickering, we'll still be here, our
members itching for some Cup racing' he said. 'It's not easy to field a team for the America's Cup, but the Anarchists are nothing if not resourceful.'

The oldest trophy in sport, the America's Cup has long been a challenge between rich industrialists, and has been filled with intrigue and conflict almost since its inception. Anarchy Challenge looks to broaden the appeal of the event in the United States, where interest in yacht racing remains nearly nonexistent despite many achievements by US sailors in the America's Cup, the pinnacle of yachting competition. 'For a century and a half, the Cup has been a shiny bauble to be battled over by the super wealthy - on the water, in the court, and in the press - yet no one in the general public pays any attention except in salty little enclaves like Newport and Annapolis' said Block. 'We think it's time the common man had access to the America's Cup - and if there's one thing that Sailing Anarchy represents, it's the common man.'

The team will be funded through a combination of donations, private and commercial investment, with Anarchy Challenge bringing a huge advantage to potential sponsors of Cup teams - a fan base that includes the millions of current readers of Sailing Anarchy. Anarchy Challenge's commercial team will commence discussions and negotiations with potential investors and sponsors during the coming months.

'The one thing we caution is not to dismiss us,' said Tempesta, when asked of the seriousness of Anarchy Challenge. 'We may not be well-funded, and we're somewhat disorganized, but we're a hell of a lot more likely to be on the starting line than some of the teams that have entered. And we'll be here long after most of them are forgotten.'

Questo è veramente un sito "sul pezzo".
Ci piace ogni tanto pubblicare qualche segnalazione real time che ci arriva dai lettori.
Dove andrà a passare l'inverno?

This is a live site.
we like to post materials sent by readers.
So here we are with Silver Surfer caught half an hour ago in an highway close to Bologna.
It was probably coming back from the Motor Show where it was last week.
Does anibody know where it is heading?

Thanks to Peppu and Elika from Civitanova Marche for the shot.

Luna Rossa on its way

Something is finally moving.

Via sito ufficiale Joe Fly

This press release will be available in English as soon as possible.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and make sure to come back on Adesso Vela.

Pix of the week

La pix of the week è dedicata al Lauro.

The pix of the week is 100 per cent for Lauro.
Marco Laurino, my best friend and an historical part of Brontolo's crew is here not because we won something (unfortunately ...) but beacuse the success of the Audi Melges 32 Winter Tune Up Series is the result of his hard work with any logistic issue.
We really can't complain when he looks tired on board, next time we will try to limit a bit the saturday night activities ;-)

Lanzarote, December 14 2008 – Having dominated proceedings all week in the Puerto Calero RC44 Gold Cup, Igor Lah nearly let victory slip from his grasp as Team Ceeref struggled to make sense of the big windshifts that tumbled off the mountains of Lanzarote in gusts that sometimes blew up to 27 knots.
Meanwhile the Slovenian’s closest rival - both at this event and for overall honours in the 2008 RC44 fleet racing season - was having a much better time in the tricky, puffy conditions. Owner of Banco Espirito Santo, Patrick de Barros credited Russell Coutts for making sense of the 40 degree shifts as the Portuguese boat picked up a 1,2 in the first two heats while Team Ceeref struggled with a 3,4.
The Portuguese were now within striking distance of the Slovenians for winning the event in Lanzarote, and were looking more secure in the defence of their lead in the 2008 rankings. Going into today, de Barros held a slim 3-point advantage over Lah in the season points scoreboard, and Ceeref had been the class act of the past week. Now de Barros had a bit more breathing room, and if he could win the final race with Ceeref last then perhaps he could steal the Gold Cup trophy too. With the strength and variable direction of the northerly wind, anything was possible.
Unfortunately Artemis had to bow out of the final race as keel problems forced Torbjorn Tornqvist to head home early. The battle for the remaining five boats was intense, with the whole fleet nose to tail at the leeward mark. Islas Canarias Puerto Calero led round that mark and while the other four boats tacked inshore, Daniel Calero kept on driving out to the right. When Calero tacked back to converge with the fleet, he was well ahead. The local spectators were getting excited at the prospect of a surprise win by a young and inexperienced team over some of the best professional sailors in the world.
The Canaries crew sailed a beautiful beat to lead handsomely around the final windward mark. However the chasing pack poured down behind them in a huge gust. At this stage Team Ceeref was way back in last place, and looked in danger of losing the Gold Cup if Banco could find their way through to first. But Ceeref tactician James Spithill called for an early gybe with the new breeze as the Slovenian boat hit 22 knots boatspeed in a gust of 27 knots. BMW ORACLE Racing was next to gybe and these two boats were locked in a high-speed battle for the lead. Ceeref prevailed, surging across the finish line in first place and securing victory in Lanzarote, to go with their match racing victory three days earlier.
Banco Espirito Santo was second in the fleet racing, followed by Team Aqua who edged third place by just a point from BMW ORACLE Racing.
Any disappointment that Patrick de Barros had for not winning the Puerto Calero RC44 Gold Cup was easily compensated for by his season victory. And Daniel Calero was happy despite having lost that last race which seemed to have been his. He is hugely encouraged by his team’s progress over the past week, and will be training harder than any team in the two months before the fleet returns to Lanzarote in late February.

2008 Fleet-Race Season (top six boats only)

(Name of team, nationality, helmsman, points)

1) Banco Espirito Santo (Portugal), Patrick de Barros - 154 points
2) Team Ceeref (Slovenia), Igor Lah - 159 points
3) Team Hiroshi (Italy), Armando Giulietti - 180 points
4) Team Aqua (United Arab Emirates) Chris Bake - 182 points
5) BMW ORACLE Racing (USA), Larry Ellison - 242 points
6) Sea Dubai (United Arab Emirates) DIMC - 276 points

WTUM - The 2nd Week End

So Long Team Germany

Car manufacturers Audi have withdrawn their sponsorship of Team Germany effectively ending the German sailing team's bid to win the America's Cup, but co-ordinator Jochen Schuemann has insisted he will fight on.
"I will not give up on the German flag," triple Olympic champion Schuemann told die Welt as the search begins for a new main sponsor.
Audi have withdrawn their financial backing due to the world economic crisis, leaving the sailing team's dreams of America's Cup success in tatters.
Team Germany challenged for the Cup in 2007 and Schuemann, who was part of the successful Cup campaigns with Alinghi in both 2003 and 2007, joined shortly after the Swiss team beat Team New Zealand in Valencia in July 2007.
Schuemann was given the bad news last week that Audi had withdrawn as main sponsors.
"We wanted to meet with Audi last week, however I got a call the night before saying there was now no need to come," said Schuemann.
Schuemann has already withdrawn Team Germany from next February's Pacific Series event in Auckland for America's Cup yachts.
Alinghi plan to hold the 33rd edition of the world's oldest yachting competition in 2010 and have set December 15 as the deadline for teams to register for the competition

WINTER CUP MELGES 24: PRIMA TAPPA

Few boats and no wind on sunday for the opening of the Melges 24 winter cup in Alassio.
Hopefully partecipation will increase for the next leg, scheduled for the last week of Januray, when the Italian squadron will start its engine

Adesso Vela new graphic

A cosa?

While our readers were busy enough in skiing, sailing in some winter cup and the lucky ones in Fort Lauderdale for the Gold Cup here at Adesso Vela we did not sleep.
We were working on the new graphics which comes directly from the cartoons world.
We like it a lot (but we are a bit partial in judging ourselves).
The Christmas decoration is temporary and it's a tribute to Google that, as you know, is our ispiration ;-)
Stay tuned, we want to move from a garage blog to your sailing intelligence reference site ...

A massive congratulations is extended to Marty Kullman and Mike Carroll (Clearwater, Fla.) on USA-131 New Wave. From early class beginnings, Marty and Mike have always been at the forefront of Melges 32 sailing. Today, they captured yet another major championship title, that of 2008 Melges 32 Gold Cup Regatta Champions! On board, making up this almost completely amateur team is Judah Rubin, Jay Kuebel, Steve Liebel, Ron Hyatt, Alex Shaffer and calling tactics was Scott Nixon. Nixon is no stranger to success as he just came off a victorious Melges 24 North American Championship with Terry Hutchinson a month or so ago in Annapolis, Md.

DAJE CARLO !!!

Gabriele Benussi is on fire!! ;-)

Long-time class veterans Marty Kullman and Mike Carroll (Clearwater, Fla.) on USA-131 New Wave have gladly taken the overall lead at the Gold Cup Regatta. Seated next to Kullman is none other than Scott Nixon calling tactics with co-owner Carroll, Steve Liebel, Alex Shafer, Judah Rubin, Ron Hyatt and Jay Kubel forming the winning crew. Trailing by one point in the overnight standings is Jeff Ecklund (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) on USA-32 STAR in second place, and tied with equal points in third is Carlo Alberini (Pesaro, Italy) on ITA-186 Calvi

Jim Swartz (Edgartown, N.Y.) on USA-007 Q, along side of tactician Gavin Brady and crew of Ben Beer, Jamie Gale, Tim Klein, Erik Doyle and Sarah Callahan played a great game of tack and jibe at the 2008 Melges 32 Gold Cup Regatta hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to take the lead with 14 points. His scoreline places him in the top spot on countback of John Kilroy's (San Francisco, Calif.) USA-13131 Samba Pa Ti with America's Cup sailor Terry Hutchinson calling tactics and crew of Eric Arndt, Eric Dorman, Justin Smart, Alan Nakanishi, Morgan Trubovich and Shana Phelan, also with 14 points. In third overall is Carlo Alberini (Pesaro, Italy) on ITA-186 Calvi Network with one of Italy's finest tacticians — Gabriele Benussi. Three great races were delivered.

The Melges 24 class is right now the closest thing to Olympic Classes.
Here the last confirmation, Pietro Sibello the famous 49er sailor recently 4ht in Quingdao has joined the Melges 24 italian fleet.
After a short experience calling tactics on Alfa Spider he will be at the helm of the new boat of the "Amante Sailing Team".

Italia Challenge

Roma, 4 Dicembre 2008 - Comunicato Stampa Italia Challenge

It’s now official: there is a new team on international sailing’s most prestigious stage. This morning, in the New Zealand embassy in the French capital, the next Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, a match race competition, was announced.

The Series will be held in Auckland from 1st to 15th February 2009. One of the 12 teams to have come through the stringent selection criteria (the candidates were nearly twice as a many), including the winner of the last two America’s Cups, Alinghi, is Italia. Italia has just been formed and is led by two of our finest yachtsmen, Vasco Vascotto and Francesco Bruni.

The team already has enough credibility on the world sailing scenario to have gained a front line place in what promises to be the most spectacular regatta in the whole of 2009.

The details of the new team will be illustrated in a press conference to be called in the next few weeks at the “Circolo Canottieri Roggero di Lauria di Palermo"

Ieri Mercoledì 3 dicembre in Namibia.
Avete capito perchè su Adesso Vela chiamiamo questi attrezzi "macchine volanti"?

Yesterday, december the 3rd, Namibia.
Sail Rocket was trying to break the world speed record for a sailing boat.
During the second run they reached 51.76 knots as top speed and 46.4 in average on the 1000 metres distance.
Then something happened, basically they exchange two natural elements going from WATER to AIR.
Now you finally understand why at Adesso Vela we called these things "the flying machines".

Velocitek SpeedPuck

Come sempre funziona a batteria.

Velocitek has announced the release of the Velocitek SpeedPuck. The device combines a high-accuracy GPS speedometer, digital compass and bar graph wind shift indicator in a compact, durable package. It is designed to be mounted on a dinghy or hand held when hiking on a sportboat.

Speed and Heading updated twice a second
Compact, low-profile design
Maximum speed recall
Bar graph for lift / header indication
Waterproof to 3m

In addition to providing easy to use real-time feedback, the SpeedPuck automatically records a rolling 20 hour GPS data log of the user's most recent races and training sessions. The SpeedPuck works with Velocitek's SpeedPlay race replay software, allowing racers to combine their GPS data with other boats and create race replays superimposed on a map background.

We like it mostly for the ease of use.
Here is an original idea for your next Christmas gift.

Ufficializzato il calendario 2009 dei Melges 24.
La nuova Volvo Cup farà tappa a:

20-22 Marzo Alassio
24-26 Aprile Punta Ala
15-17 Maggio Lerici
11-14 Giugno Cagliari (Campionato Italiano)
02-05 Luglio Torbole (Melges Week)

Here is the official schedule for the 2009 Melges 24 season.

March 20th to 22nd Alassio (Liguria)
April 24th to 26th Punta Ala (Tuscany)
May 15th to 17th Lerici (Liguria)
June 11th to 14th Cagliari (Sardinia) Italian Championship
July 2nd to 5th Torbole (Trentino) Melges Week

C’è fermento in casa Volvo, e grande entusiasmo.

Sotto a chi tocca

It seems that the withdrawn of the entry from Mascalzone Latino, and probably the one from the German team, will force the Louis Vuitton organizers to "upgarde" the guys on the waiting list.
The evergreen Francesco De Angelis and his mostly unknown team are in pole position to be included in the starting line.
The baron is still alive.
Don't forget he has won already a Louis Vuitton Cup.

Vincenzo Onorato"

"Dear friends and supporters,
It is with deep regret that I inform you to have withdrawn the entry of our team from the next Louis Vuitton Pacific Series.
This decision is the result of a lengthy deliberation, and it doesn’t reflect my wish. It is due to the difficult international economic situation which is making nearly impossible to find sponsors that would cover, even partially, the operational costs for a participation aiming a good performance.
Further, making a low level’s participation to the Auckland regatta would mortify our aspirations for an event which deserves the maximum standard in terms of sport and organization.
My great sorrow in giving up is mostly for Louis Vuitton which is , in my opinion , the only depositary of the Cup's tradition and dignity.
For this reason, I wish “good wind” to this event and to all participants and I hope its promoters will keep on with their dedication into our sport with the same passion they always had.
On our part, while waiting for the America’s Cup to find a reasonable and viable way to be pursued, Mascalzone Latino confirms its participation into 2009 Farr 40 Class regatta.

Vincenzo Onorato"

Two of the best sailors in the world busy at the end of the day in cleaning their boat and getting ready for the following day.
That's how you make the difference.
Definetely a good exemple ...
