Che la Rolex Sydney Hobart partiva oggi ve l'hanno detto in tanti.
Vi avranno anche già raccontato dell'equipaggio del Farr 52 Georgia che perso il timone ha lanciato un May Day ed è stato messo in salvo grazie all'intervento di alcuni concorrenti.
Nessuno, o comunque pochi, hanno parlato delle origini e della storia della regata.
Eccoci qua:

Nell'aprile del 1945 uno dei primo soci del Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, l'artista nativo di Sydney Jack Earl, era ancorato a Quarantine non distante dallo yacht proveniente dalla Tasmania Saltair.
Earl e la sua famiglia stavano pianificando una crociera natalizia verso Hobart e approfittò dell'occasione per avvicinarsi a Saltair, di proprietà della famiglia Walker, per dare un'occhiata alle loro carte nautiche.
I Walker incuriositi dall'iniziativa decisero che avrebbero partecipato anche loro.
Successivamente, nel mese di maggio, il regatante oceanico inglese John Illingworth che era in visita in Australia venne invitato a partecipare.
Nell'accettare chiese che la crociera inizialmente pianificata venisse trasformata in una vera e propria regata tra amici.
Fu così che nacque la Sidney Hobart Yacht Race che nella sua prima edizione, 63 anni fa, vide nove yachts sulla linea di partenza.
Proprio nel 1945, anche a causa delle avverse condizioni del tempo, venne stabilito un record, forse poco glorioso, che mai nessuno è riuscito a battere.
Il Wayfarer di Peter Luke arrivò a destinazione dopo 11 giorni, 6 ore e 20 minuti.
A tutt'oggi questo è il tempo di percorrenza della regata più lungo mai registrato.
Oggi la Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race è considerato l'evento sportivo più importante in Australia e vanta stabilmente 350.000 - 400.000 spettatori alla partenza in quello che gli anglosassoni chiamano Boxing Day.

They told you already that he crew of the Farr 52 Georgia is safe after launching a may day.
Nobody spent few minutes in telling you the history of this classic yacht racing event.
Here we are:

In april 1945 an early member of the Crusing Yacht Club of Australia, Sydney artist Jack Earl, was anchored near Quarantine not far from where the Tasmanian yacht Saltair was also anchored.
Earl and his family were planning a cruise to Hobart at Christmas time and Jack rowed over to Saltair, owned by the Walker family, to look at their chart.
The Walkers asked if they might join the cruise.
In may 1945 Peter Luke invited the well known british ocean sailor, Commander John Illingworth, to join.
Illingworth is alleged to have said, "why don't we make a race of it?"
That's how the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race was born, a fleet of nine yachts took the starter's gun on december the 26th of 1945.
A curiosity about the first edition is that the Wayfarer, owned by Peter Luke took 11 days, 6 hours and 20 minutes to arrive in Hobart.
A record fot the longest-ever time to complete the course which stands today.
The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has become Australia's first real carnival, with the largest live audience of any single sport event in the continent, attracting some 300.000 - 400.000 spectators to Sydney's foreshores on Boxing Day.
